Handy Tips to Help You Stay Safe Online

Most of us have experienced the troubles that computer viruses bring, with many people losing computers to viruses that are able to completely destroy digital devices and make them unusable ever again. There are many dangers on the internet that we need to be aware of and take measures to protect ourselves against, including viruses, malware, spyware and cyber criminals that seek to steal passwords and use our information for their benefit.

Application whitelisting is a good example of a preventative measure that can be taken to protect your computer and protect your personal information and there are many software programs that can be used to protect your passwords, often using encrypting technology that seems to gets better by the day. Here are a few handy tips to help you stay safe online.

Strong Passwords

It’s easy to get lax with passwords and use the same password for all your online accounts, but this would be a mistake, even though your password might be a very strong one. A strong password is a must and while it’s ok to use the same password for several accounts (not financial accounts) like email and social media, you need to be very careful about the passwords that you use for online banking and anything that requires your financial information, for example, credit card numbers.

Install a Firewall

All operating systems come with a firewall already installed, though many computer users choose to install an additional firewall to deliver extra protection. For most of us this simply isn’t necessary, however, it’s a good idea to check your firewall and perhaps adjust the level of protection that it’s providing.

Security Updates

A mistake that many computer users make is not keeping up to date with their computer’s security requirements by being lax about downloading security updates when prompted. For your computer’s security applications to protect your computer, they need to be kept up to date.

Shop Safely

Unless a website has ‘https’ and the padlock icon to either side of the URL it shouldn’t be considered a safe website to shop on. All it takes is a single incident and your valuable personal information, including your credit card details, could fall into the wrong hands and that can result in all kinds of problems. Don’t take any chances, only shop on websites that are secure.

Use the Right Software

In addition to protecting your computer with a good antivirus program, use additional software programs like application whitelisting which only allows files it trusts to run. Programs like this are used by many businesses today to protect their information and assets, and many individuals are also using them to protect their computers and personal information from cyber criminals.

To stay safe online, use the right software programs to protect your digital devices, use strong passwords, install a firewall and shop safely. By following these tips and being aware of the dangers presented by using the internet, you’ll keep your computers, digital devices and personal information safe.
